Photoblog : Cape Lookout

We headed to the coast this saturday. We hiked up to Cape Lookout, at Cape Lookout State park.  There are three hiking trails. We took the one that is about 5 miles hike round trip. Most of it was a walk through the woods, with a lot of song birds singing in the trees. There were Red Alder, Spruce, Cedar and lots of shrubs with berries on them. I didnt know their names.. I came back and looked up on the web and they turned out to be Salmonberry and Salal.  There was a historic marker where a B-17 bomber crashed into the 800 feet cliff on a transit run in World War II. The Trail passes over this point. There were no survivors and the wreakage is no more visible.

Salmonberry looked a little like the blackberry only they arent black, but a very nice peach colour and I didnt want to eat it without really knowing what it was.  I did eat Salal though, cause there were people at the viewpoint who knew what it was and were eating it.

The Salal looked like blue berries and had a bland to tart taste when not soft.

These two are not pictures taken by me. I took them off images from a googled site.

Most of the hike we could smell the salt from the ocean and hear the waves. We had a lot of fog cover. It had this misty ethereal feel to it.  At somepoints we were on a sheer cliff looking down at the ocean. At the beginning of the trail we read that the area had bears. We didnt know if they just posted a warning for the just in case or there really were Bears, we didnt see any.   It rained in some parts of the trail and was dry on others. When we got to the top, we got to see a Bald eagle sitting on the tree, very majestically. We also got to see the ariel view of the ocean without actually getting on a plane.  The birds were very busy, we saw, Loons, seagulls, swallows, herons from the top, like as if we are flying on top of them.. Here are a few snapshots.

The trees in the mist.

We couldnt really make out where the fog ended and the ocean began.

This made our day. He sat there looking gorgeously cool, asking "Do I pass muster?"

Looking down from 400 ft above the ocean with solid ground under your feet. It feels WOW! My children were a little afraid of looking down, said they felt like they are falling. Me on the otherhand, I like the view and the height as I watch life in miniature. It seems a lot easier to handle :P.

A swallow sat a little distance from us, on a jut out. I admired its confidence, it was like it knew I wouldnt go up to it.

That line is a sand spit a few miles away. It is supposedly a beach combers paradise. We were too tired to beach comb at the end of the hike.  But we did go to the beach on the way back.

We vegetated while the kids played in the water and sand. We didnt stay long at the beach, just for an hour or so.

That brings me to the end of my Saturday Trip.  Hope you enjoyed the visit.

I am sure its breath taking view of the Sea. It reminds me of our last year trip to Musandam pennisula. We were driving on the mountain and all of a sudden there was downhill road as if leading directly to Sea.Fortunately Brake was perfect in my car.

Such romantic photos....Mother Nature is so talented....and so is the photographer who can catch her in action. ..So much better a way for the family to spend a free day .. rather than glued to a screen of some sort. I like your style, Rashmi
