Being Peace - Thich Nhat Hanh

Every time I read a book to build awareness, I become discontent, because my attention is drawn to the things I can’t grasp as they are outside of my experience or things that I know but can’t apply, things that somehow make me feel like I am less than what I want myself to be. I have this expectation that at the age I am, I “should” be a certain way.  I should be Calm, Poised, Graceful, Compassionate, Disciplined, Worldly, Brave etc.. But none of those qualities are quantifiable and I am left wondering if I really am enough.  The idea of better is limitless. Just like money; I can’t have enough of a better me.

I finished reading the book, Being Peace by Thich Nhat Hanh.  It is an insightful read as is most of his books. He has a way with analogy that I enjoy, as it makes me see things from a perspective I didn’t care to see  before.  I am, for most purposes a peaceful person, ’cause I don’t go looking for a conflict.  Yet, now and then Conflict comes my way, and they are mostly with the people I live with or those who are close to me.  I think, being near and around each other somehow magnifies the conflict.    Guess it’s the same as our eyes, the closer you get to the object the more clear the vision.  And clarity of vision shows the many perfections or flaws.   Maybe familiarity does breed Contempt more than Acceptance.  Or maybe Judgment leads to contempt. I have no idea what I am rambling about.

Getting back to the topic,  I enjoy this Buddhist monk’s simple yet profound explanations.  He states the obvious, if we aren’t happy then we can’t have Peace. So the primary path to Peace is for each person to find his/her happiness. Happiness which isn’t rooted in anyone or anything else other than their self.  I See what he means, when I look at days when I feel complete and nothing shakes my sense of peace and wellbeing, it is usually the day I was joyful, cheerful without reason(of course, the Sun being out plays a major part).  He explains how our mind is like the channels on the TV and we will end up watching/doing the channel we tune into. So being aware of what we are tuning into helps keep us  grounded.  It made me look at the things I tune into.  Most times I see light, but I am aware there is a Darkness within me that comes out when I least expect it to.  Hurts from the past that were never resolved and I dont see any way for resolution, Aches from experience that I can’t let go of and a sense of Blinding Anger(which I do use to get chores long pending done around the house) that stems from the hurt and perceived injustice of life and the cynical sarcastic voice within that goes “Who said Life was Fair”.  With these going on within, I perpetuate them into my outside existence, and my reality aligns as such.  I guess it is time to let go… Mantra for the time will be Let Go! Let Go! Let Go!

I also liked what he said about Listening.  About Compassionate Listening to be exact, which I discovered is not what I do. I don’t always listen with my whole being, without judgment.  Listening with my whole being would entail a sense of quietness of mind and body. As he says, you listen not only with your ears, but every other part of your body.  I think I understand why some people are seemingly more intuitive and attuned to the world than the others. It has nothing to do with superiority or inferiority as it is Listening and responding with their Whole Self.  Mostly, I would have the gist within the first few words and I would be busy formulating a response or I would be pre-occupied with something I wanted to get done so I will be going over the ”To Do” list, when I am supposed to listen. No wonder I feel like I forgot something.  The times I actually Listen Completely, are few.  When I did, I heard the children tell each other jokes and giggles peal out, I hear the woodpecker knock on the chimney, I hear my husbands thoughts(ok, that is exaggeration, although I am usually spot on when I suddenly respond to something he hasn’t yet said), I can hear the noise of myself - a  static hiss, that I hear in the quiet of the night.

He also talks about how we are what we eat.  He mentions how our addictions to certain kinds of foods and drinks contribute to the world hunger without our knowledge.  For instance, he talks of making alcohol and how those very grains that are used to brew the drink, could be used to feed the hungry instead.  For a moment I thought Oh NO!!! he’s going to say the same of Chocolate and Ice cream.  But he didn’t mention them. Phew!!

Ok Jokes aside. I do think he has a valid point. If we didn’t use agricultural lands for growing tobacco or cocoa or poppy to feed our wants and addictions, instead used them to grow grains that will feed people, things would be different. If the big corporations didnt take over land from small farmers to feed our addictions in the free world market, then even if there was no money, people would be fed.  When people have a filled belly they are happier than when they had an empty one.

He talked about how Animals are slaughtered to feed the growing appetite for meat around the world. He didn’t say don’t eat meat, but that be aware of where the source is, cause the chickens that are cooped, cattle that are confined and fed hormones, all fattened for slaughter, go through very negative emotions that stem from going against their nature.   Their nature is wild, to be in open spaces which we supress by domestication.  When we eat their meat, we imbibe those energies of sadness, frustration, anger, etc.  Of course, we can argue that they don’t have emotions, but the fact is, we don’t know, so we can argue that they feel exactly like we do.  He mentions using organic foods, and finding sources that aren’t cruel.  I wondered how many of us could afford to go Organic with everything, now that the genie of cheaper "Not  Organic" food is rampant.  But he had a point that if we spent more on organic, we would also become aware of how much we ate.  After all the amount of food we need to sustain ourselves is much lesser than what we actually think we should eat as per the present Medical theory.  Eating to sustain ourselves instead of indulging ourselves will keep us healthy and living longer to serve humankind.  Our stomach being about the size of our palms, a fistful of food  should sustain us.

I did agree with his points but I have a little problem giving up coffee, chocolate and ice-cream.. Ok, I can give up Ice-cream and Chocolate but Coffee.. hmmm….

Will stop for now. Have a wonderful Day. Thank you for reading.

Never say goodbye.

Its been two decades since they broke off from each other. They managed to stay out of each other's radar though they lived in the same city. They were to each other, their first love, their first holding of hands, their first kiss and first acknowlegement of  soul-mate.   Yet, on this day, destiny bowled a googly.  They bumped into each other at a street corner food stall. This stall wasnt anywhere close to where either lived. Yet they ended up here at this stall, on that day, at the same time, without a prior appointment, without ever calling each other, without ever really thinking of the other, without any expectation of this ever happening. The world suddenly is quiet within Her and within Him.  All they hear is the heartbeat of the other standing across them.  All they see is the reflection of themselves in the others eye, as they were when they had first met, all those years ago, in their youth, when the word, Impossible, did not exist within their existence, when Forever was not unachievable, when Love was their only nourishment.  In those few seconds, each met the other in a world invisible to others around them.  Neither said a word, as they quietly ordered their food. They eat in silence and walked together to the Taxi stand.  Each very aware of the other's breath, walking through pictures of each other memories, like a movie through time. Each enveloped with a the chill of Regret and the warmth of Love that never went away all these years.  Each with the "if only's and what if's"  sparring many rounds in their minds.

He puts out his hand for the taxi, which stops for him. Opens the door, as she climbs in.  Without a voice, a sentence starts within his mind "If this leaving was only...." finishes in her mind "to come back to you again."  He hails another taxi and gets in.  On the sidewalk where the taxi stopped for the two them...a Lingering Mist Stayed where each left their invisible self to never say goodbye.

Ten thoughts Tuesday - 23/3/2010

1. The sun is shining, its spring break, I woke up late, my coffee is warm, the children are home, life is good.

2. Yesterday my daughter turned 10. We had a birthday party for a handful of her friends just as she wished, she is on cloud nine.

3. We have left over Pizza and Cake for breakfast and then it will be done.  This time I ordered just enough. Thank Heavens I learned :P.

4. Looking into meanings for Nerd and Geek, how the word came about, how it's usage has changed since it came about, has made me wonder if those who were called so in a derogatory manner, had unrecognized forms of autism in its mild or severe form.

5. I finished reading Being Peace... though it was a small book, it took me a while. I realize that I dont always listen with my full attention when my children talk to me.  I would have got the gist of what they want to say even before they did and hence most times on auto response.. I need to change that to being ALL there when they talk.  I hope it isnt too late to do that.

6. Watched the movie Defiance over the weekend.  It is a true story of the Bielski brothers who escaped the Nazi slaughtering and lived in the Belarussian Forests for three years with about 1200 other Jews and survived to tell their tale.  The story is well told but it didnt move me the way Schindler's List did.   The story is a testimony of human resilience.  I wonder if I would have survived had such a thing happened to me, or would I have given up and died... We never know until it happens to us.

7. I havent been around online as much these few days...I hope to make my rounds once spring break is done.  Thank you for your patience :).

8. The much talked about, much argued about, much jostled for a place to make a point and find power, US Insurance reform bill has been passed.  Will it look like it has been envisioned to, when its implemented?  When does it begin being implemented? What are the unforseen repercussions of it?  Guess we will have to wait and see.

9. I still havent given up on my idea of Perfection.   I still have this need to have no fingerprints on the counters and tables; no toys, legos, boardgames books and art/craft work on the floor; clothes all neatly folded up or hung, neatly arranged in the closet, the mirror without water spots, faucets shining, dustless furniture etc. etc. .... all this, in spite of telling myself, this wont be something that matters when I die.

10. Going back to 9.. I need Adrian Monk to help me clean house everyday to Perfection.

Creative Challenge #93 - Where did the time go?

My Insatiable Search

I search high and low

For a time –

When children played on the streets,

And no parent worried for their safety.

When elders could correct or teach any child

And no one chastised them.

When Right was recognized as such

Even though we didn’t speak the other’s language.

When Respect was something everyone already had

Not something that had to be earned.

When Religion was a way of life,

Not something traded for Money and Power.

When spirituality was a norm,

Not something for our ego to build on

When People knew how to be Good neighbours

Productive citizens, Ethical employees, Benevolent employers

Lovingly Committed husbands and wives and Dutiful loving Children

Elders knew to wield their wisdom

Not manipulate it to satisfy their whim.

When Reputation, Honour and Integrity meant the world

And Righteousness didn’t involve killing or exiling

When compassion wrapped every thought, word and deed

Life was about living in Harmony

Surely the wheel of time hasn’t turned so far

Has it?

Sacred Vows

You, I and exchanged vows
Beneath the umbrella of sky above.
The clasp of our hands
Beside the Sacred Fire
Blessings from unseen lands
Within our souls lair.
We walk together
Each other's support
Come Rain or Shine
Each other's comfort.
The touch of our hands
Holding depths of our love
This be Our destiny
For Lifetimes to come.

Running

I pound the gravel up the hill
Running as fast as I could
Sure of being pursued.
No time to turn and look
The chaser in the eye.
Now too tired from the exertion
I try to remember what got me running.
Only to realize
I know not why or what I run from
Could it be Life?

Why women envy Men.

Now for the Benefits of Being a Woman according to Momofrs:

  • - We got off the Titanic first.
  • - We get to flirt with IT support guys (who always return our calls, and are nice to us when we blow up our computers).
  • - Our boyfriend’s clothes make us look elfin & gorgeous. Guys look like complete idiots in ours.
  • - We can be groupies. Male groupies are stalkers.
  • - We can cry and get off speeding fines.
  • - We can scare male bosses with mysterious gynecological disorder excuses.
  • - Taxis stop for us.
  • - Men die earlier, so we get to cash in on the life insurance.
  • - We don’t look like a frog in a blender when dancing. (not true according to me)
  • - Free drinks, free dinners, free movies….you get the drift.
  • - We can hug our friends without wondering if they’re gay.
  • - We can hug our friends without wondering if WE’RE gay.
  • - If we’re not making enough money we can blame the glass ceiling.
  • - We don’t have to fart to amuse ourselves.
  • - We can congratulate our teammate without ever touching her butt.
  • - If we have a zit, we know how to conceal it.
  • - We never have to reach down every so often to make sure our privates are still there.
  • - If we’re dumb, some people will find it cute. (I dont agree with this)
  • - We have the ability to dress ourselves…AND our Men.
  • - We can talk to people of the opposite sex without having to picture them naked.
  • - There are times when chocolate really solves all our problems.
  • - We’ll never regret piercing our ears.
  • - We can fully assess a person just by looking at their shoes.
  • - We know which glass was ours by the lipstick mark.

Have a wonderful Thursday!

Ten Thought Tuesday - Mar 2nd 2010

1. We had a belated party for my son's 8th birthday on Sunday and he is happy.

2. I ordered so much cake that we had cake for breakfast and dinner yesterday.  All this after sending two chunks to my neighbours.

3. I am still reading Thich Nhat Hanh's books on Anger, Peace and Power and felt like I have more of the 1st and less of the other two... Shouldn't it be the other way round?

4. I have slipped up on Pranayama and haven't done it in the last 3 weeks.. have to get back to it.

5. I notice when life gets a little busy, its what I do for myself that gets shelved.  Note to self : I need to be more about ME.

6.  I love movies made from an older period in history. Apart from actors doing a good job at portrayal, I think, its because of the costumes, the subtlety and depth of emotions.  My recent watch was a miniseries called "North and South" with Daniela Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage and "Doctor Zhivago" with Keira Knightley and Hans Matheson. Both were a good watch.

7.  The weather is getting better, but I am afraid that if I appreciate it, I will jinx it.

8.  Why is it difficult to understand that there is a difference between Criticism, Personal Preferences and Opinion?

9. I feel very un-savvy with technology cause I do not use the cell phone, the computer, facebook etc..with the fervor that many others in my peer group use, they text, sms, use the blue-tooth, access email via phone, never part with their laptops and have conversations everyday on facebook, Have accounts in numerous Networking sites...While for me, all of that serves a purpose but I can happily exist without it.  Is something wrong with me?

10.  Self-Discoveries this Week :

  • I am lazy. I got only 25 % of the jobs, done on my to do list. On the other hand, I don't know why I punish myself with the LIST.
  • I am not as brave as I thought I was. I still jump every time a spider or a reptile crawls out.
  • My children think I am funny cause I tickle them into never-ending  laughter. Should I tell them, Funny is associated with Wit and not with tickles?

Is this what we want for our children? Sometimes I wonder, is the Isolation worth it? Does this really reflect how we actually feel or are we just using another mask?
