Picture-Perfect : Magical

The first time I saw a Double Rainbow, there was such an inexplainable wonder.   And it was unexpected.  Living in Portland, OR means you deal with rain most of the days, except in summer.    On this particular day, I was grilling corn out on our patio.  I am the kind that gets very lost in what I am doing.  So imagine my surprise, when I lift my head and this was the view I saw.  After a few seconds of  awe my senses came back, so I called out to the rest of the family, and of course to highlight the moment, I took a photo.

Enjoy.

Poetry Wednesday - Lady of Shalott

The above picture is taken from the wikipedia- Painting by John William Waterhouse's The Lady of Shalott, 1888 (Tate Gallery, London)

Lady of Shalott- PART IV- by Lord Tennyson

    In the stormy east-wind straining,
The pale yellow woods were waning,
The broad stream in his banks complaining,
    Heavily the low sky raining
           Over tower’d Camelot;
Down she came and found a boat
    Beneath a willow left afloat,
And round about the prow she wrote
           The Lady of Shalott.

And down the river’s dim expanse
Like some bold seër in a trance,
    Seeing all his own mischance–
    With a glassy countenance
           Did she look to Camelot.
And at the closing of the day
    She loosed the chain, and down she lay;
The broad stream bore her far away,
           The Lady of Shalott.

    Lying, robed in snowy white
That loosely flew to left and right–
The leaves upon her falling light–
Thro’ the noises of the night
           She floated down to Camelot:
And as the boat-head wound along
The willowy hills and fields among,
They heard her singing her last song,
           The Lady of Shalott.

    Heard a carol, mournful, holy,
    Chanted loudly, chanted lowly,
Till her blood was frozen slowly,
And her eyes were darken’d wholly,
           Turn’d to tower’d Camelot.
For ere she reach’d upon the tide
The first house by the water-side,
Singing in her song she died,
           The Lady of Shalott.

    Under tower and balcony,
    By garden-wall and gallery,
A gleaming shape she floated by,
    Dead-pale between the houses high,
           Silent into Camelot.
Out upon the wharfs they came,
Knight and burgher, lord and dame,
And round the prow they read her name,
           The Lady of Shalott.

Who is this? and what is here?
And in the lighted palace near
    Died the sound of royal cheer;
And they cross’d themselves for fear,
           All the knights at Camelot:
    But Lancelot mused a little space;
    He said, ‘She has a lovely face;
God in his mercy lend her grace,
           The Lady of Shalott.’

For the first three parts of this Poem and for a Biography of Lord Alfred Tennyson Go here

This poem made me cry the first time I read it.  I think Lord Tennyson wrote beautiful poetry.

I realize not everyone is as fascinated as I am for Arthurian Legends. Sir Lancelot, was my crush when I read the Story of Arthur.   So anything and everything to do with Lancelot I would read. I am glad he isn’t alive, it would be very embarrassing for me(giggling) if he were.   So here is the story of the Lady of Shalott, that I found on the Net. There are two versions to the story.  I am presenting it so that those reading this poem enjoy the story behind the Poem.  It was loosely based on the Arthurian legend of Elaine of Astolat.  She was also known as Elaine the White and Elaine the Fair, she is the daughter of Bernard of Astolat.

In Malory's 15th century Le Morte d'Arthur, Elaine's story begins when her father Bernard of Astolat organizes a jousting tournament, attended by King Arthur and his knights. While Lancelot was not originally planning to attend, he is convinced otherwise and visits Bernard and his two sons before the tournament.

While Lancelot is in her family's household, Elaine becomes enamoured of him and begs him to wear her token at the coming tournament. Explaining that Guinevere would be at the tournament, he consents to wear the token but says that he will have to fight in disguise so as not to be recognised. He then asks Bernard if he can leave his recognizable shield with him and borrow another. Bernard agrees and lends him the plain-white shield of Torre, Elaine's brother.

Lancelot goes on to win the jousting tournament, still in disguise, fighting against King Arthur's party and beating forty of them in the tournament. He does, however, receive an injury to his side from Bors's lance, and is carried off the field by Lavaine to the hermit Sir Baudwin's (an ex-Round Table knight) cave. Elaine then urges her father to let her bring the wounded Lancelot to her chambers, where she nurses him. When Lancelot is well, he makes ready to leave, and offers to pay Elaine for her services; insulted, Elaine brings him his shield, which she had been guarding, and a wary Lancelot leaves the castle, never to return but now aware of her feelings for him.

Ten days later, Elaine dies of heartbreak. Per her instructions, her body is placed in a small boat, clutching a lily in one hand, and her final letter in the other. She then floats down the Thames to Camelot, where she is discovered by King Arthur's court. Lancelot is summoned and hears the contents of the letter, after which he explains what had happened. Lancelot proceeds to pay for a rich funeral and Elaine's mass-penny, at her request.

The other story talks of a curse. Elaine was cursed to never look at the world directly but to weave a tapestry of all that she views via a reflection on the Mirror.   So she sits by her castle window weaving the tapestry while singing songs with her beautiful yet haunting voice.  Everyone in the village knew who she was but no one really saw her.

One day she spies Sir Lancelot riding alone into the town. She is so enamoured by his Handsomeness and Grace, that she steels a Direct view of him through her window.  The mirror shatters, the tapestry flies off on the wind,  a sudden storm arise and the Lady feels the power of her curse.

The lady leaves her castle, finds a boat, writes her name on it, gets into the boat, sets it adrift, and sings her death song as she drifts down the river to Camelot. The locals find the boat and the body, realize who she is, and are saddened. Lancelot prays that God will have mercy on her soul.

      Choosing Insanity

      Each time she fell
      She sat alone
      Nursing her wounds
      Vowing "NEVER AGAIN"
      Thinking "Never Ever"
      Never letting anyone close
      Sparing them the pain,
      Or was it for herself?

      She thought,
If I did this long enough
      I would never need anyone
      Never Depend on anyone
      Never want anything
      Being self-contained
      Life would be bliss.

      Two decades past
      Since she made the vow
      Yet, she watches in vain
      The beautiful patterns of hurt
      Always ending with a vow-
Of "Never Again's and the Never Ever's"
She sighs, "I must be Insane."

      Ode to a Pillow

      You, held me,
      While I cried
      Lending me your softness
      Like a Cuddly toy

      You, know me better
      Than I do myself
Not because of what I tell you
But because of what I dont.

      You, have heard the secrets
      Never to be told,
      On, not alone,
      But lonely nights.

      You, my dear pillow
      Though not handsome
      Have been more constant
      Than those who vowed Constance.

      Times they are A-changing

I have been overly pre-occupied with Stuff that Housewives do- the kind that you have nothing to show for the time spent, once its done and you redundantly do it all over again most everyday and yet its never Done.. Ok, that was my wicked twin in "Complain Mode".

Here's a song that I thought was apt for the way I was feeling.

      Bod Dylan's - Times they are A-changing

Have a Good Weekend all you Lovely folks!

      Weekend Gibran

I have had a wonderful week. So I am feeling grateful for all that it was. I hope you all had a Good work week too... and Do Have a Lovely Weekend. Remember the 3 R's- Rest, Rejuvenation and Relaxation. I am going to share a little of Khalil Gibran, I read a while ago. I enjoy Khalil Gibran's writing. There is something profoundly true about what he says and he knows how to say it in a manner that is not condescending or preachy or I am holier than thou. Here is one of his stories from "The Madman" .

      A blade of grass

Said a blade of grass to an autumn leaf, "You make such a noise falling! You scatter all my winter dreams."
Said the leaf indignant, "Low-born and low-dwelling! Songless, peevish thing! You live not in the upper air and you cannot tell the sound of singing."
Then the autumn leaf lay down upon the earth and slept. And when spring came she waked again -- and she was a blade of grass.
And when it was autumn and her winter sleep was uponher, and above her through all the air the leaves were falling, she muttered to herself, "O these autumn leaves! They make such a noise! They scatter all my winter dreams."
      ---Khalil Gibran.

      Earth Day

      We've come a full circle
      It would seem
      To the dawn of  realization
That the Earth is Breathing Being
Living, not the way we know LIFE
      Yet, Holding all LIFE.

      Just for today
      We revel in the awareness
      That what happens to Her
      We do unto ourselves
      That to hurt her
      Would be to hurt our-self
      That to disrespect her
      Would be to disrespect us.
That to take her for granted
      Would mean our Death.

      We drink of her Blood,
      Yet we poison her rivers
      We breathe through her lungs,
Yet we cut down her trees
      We dig out her heart
      We gouge her stomach
      And then we complain -
"Oh Nature is so cruel, to change so"
When the sun scorches our skins
When her harvest makes us sick.

When we want to renew our lives
      We call upon ourselves
      The Scourge of Wars
      Against our own kind
      And then we sigh -
"Oh Nature is so cruel, for being so"
      For perpetuating violence
      through our genes.

      In all our whining,
      Sighing and Pining,
      We forgot
That all we had to do
Was to take care Of her,
      Right where we stood.

      Spring of Eternal Life

Standing in the glen at sunset
      Heavy was her life's debt
      Watching warm light shining through
      The tree's rich, green hue.

      Stepping on the fallen leaf
      Thinking of Death, the thief,
      Always lurking close by
      Like a worried mother's sigh.

      Upon the clear spring
      She did chance
      Life forever, its waters bring
"What luck!"  joyfully, she did dance.

Till she heard that sigh again
All gone, leaving her to remain
Eternal Life, she looked with disdain
As she felt the world's pain.

      World have your say.

Hope you are all having a Good, Productive Work week. Sorry for not being here.  Life has taken over for now.  I am trying to not feel overwhelmed but I feel it on my feet and neck(yes, I carry stress on my neck and feet... If Any one knows how to give a good foot massage, I would be Grateful :P?

One of the things I love about life in USA is being able to listen to the National Public Radio(yes, small things make me HAPPY). For the past two days, I have been listening in on one of the programs that is in collaboration with BBC  "World have your Say". The topic for the last two days were- Race(its easier for me to listen to something as I do my chores than watch something).  Yes, its mostly a Taboo topic.  I dont like discussing it either cause for the most part, what I say could be misconstrued or looked upon as somehow my lack of "self-confidence" and I dont like defending my stand either way.  Its my perception and thats that, I cant understand why I have to explain or elaborate it.

Its been my experience with taboo subjects - people dont want to talk about it. Although its obvious, most  think that if we deny something, it will cease to exist.  While this does work for some things(like denying attention to a whining Kid and ignoring him to the point where he is forced to modify behaviour positively to get attention), I dont think it works when it comes to Racism.  There is also a sort of Fear of Offending the seemingly presumed "oppressed", of not being Politically correct.

While I do have my own experiences with discrimination in terms of racism, I refuse to let it dictate how I walk through my life. Yes, it is annoying and somethings become difficult because of it but I believe that if I cant walk through it, theres always a way around it if I look hard enough.  I have observed different ways in which people cope with it.  Some will deny their own heritage, native tongue, Name given to them,  traditions, religious observances, culture etc. in the hope that they will belong to the dominant group.  Some will become obsessed with rising up in the ladder of Economic Status so no one dares discriminate them with regards to their skin colour.  I guess, each has to do what  works for them best.

Reality to me is, there is always going to be discrimination of some kind or another, if its not about my skin colour, it could be about  my gender or my physical appearance or my accent or what I eat or wear or how I walk or talk or do something or work etc... I do accomodate people when its possible to do so but would I give up all that I am so I could be accepted into the dominant group.. I dont know, I havent been in any drastic situation where I have to.  The other face of Reality that I am very aware of is, that no matter what a person's physical attributes and attitudes in life are, it lasts only so long, we all have to die.   So I would rather embrace all that I am including my frailities.

Now for the program and the opinions thereoff.  Today's question was Does your skin colour define you?

For me- It does and doesnt define me. It would completely depend on the situation I am in.  My skin colour is something I am aware off only when I am in a Group that is Pre-dominately White, otherwise, I dont even think about it. Do I act white or a certain way to be accepted?  Oh lordy! I hope not.  I do speak English slower when I speak to someone who isnt Indian, but it is more to accomodate proper communication.  Cause that was my experience for the first year I was in the US, most Americans couldnt understand what I said cause I spoke fast and my accent made it difficult to understand.. so I slowed down, I spell the words sometimes so that they know what I am talking about.. Its not so difficult for me to understand them although most of their Jokes are lost on me (giggling).

One of the Guests said something that I thought was the crux of the issue. That it doesnt matter whether the person of colour actually thinks in terms of their colour, but that they will be forced to think so when the others around them have them boxed because of their colour.  I felt that was the deal for most of the coloured folk.  Most arent aware that they are dark skinned until someone points out that they are different.

I couldnt find a feed or archive for the program at BBC.  But I did find the World have your say Blog.  So here you go enjoy the comments.

      Peace Always

      Rashmi.

      Tears in Smiles

Smiles lighting up the face always
      Pouring joy into heaven's stairways
Sending curves to the fairy's lips
      Happiness tingling at finger tips.

Yet a trail of ache remain
      In shadows left behind
      Singing to her voice's content
      Revealing the coiled serpent.

      Each recognize their own kind
Their own kind, they will find
Like a dancer knows those who dance
Like a singer knows those who sing.

Those who cry, hear her silent cry.
How does she hide her tear?
Wonder the ones who are dear.
Does she hide her tear with a smile?
Maybe changed the way she cried.

      Picture Perfect- Framed

This was taken 3 years ago when we went to the Tom McCall Waterfront at Portland, OR. I did Crop this Picture.  Every year around May-June Portland celebrates the Rose Festival.  One of the Events at the Festival is the Dragon Boat Race.

These are a set of Dragon Boats- a Gift to Portland from the sister city,  Kaohsiung in Taiwan, that are used for a Boat race every year.

The practice sessions start around April.  This year about 100 teams are participating.  The races are held on the Willamette River near the Hawthorne Bridge in boats provided through the Portland-Kaohsiung Sister City Association.

Here are some more Photos for your Viewing Pleasure.

      Same Difference

Only when I sit with You
      Do I notice -
      The gnarl of my hands,
      The wrinkles on my face,
      The darkness of my skin,
      The blackness of my hair

Only when I look in your eyes
      Do I notice -
      The brown-ness of my eyes
      The shortness of my being,
      The greyness at my temples,
      The thoughts that make me.

Only when I am with you
      Do I notice -
      The need to extend myself
      The want of material riches
      The Growing, I havent grown
      The meaninglessness of Life.

Only when I sit with you
There is a Me and a You,
      When I sit alone,
All is Me and I am all
I am you and you are Me.
