My Insatiable Search
I search high and low
For a time –
When children played on the streets,
And no parent worried for their safety.
When elders could correct or teach any child
And no one chastised them.
When Right was recognized as such
Even though we didn’t speak the other’s language.
When Respect was something everyone already had
Not something that had to be earned.
When Religion was a way of life,
Not something traded for Money and Power.
When spirituality was a norm,
Not something for our ego to build on
When People knew how to be Good neighbours
Productive citizens, Ethical employees, Benevolent employers
Lovingly Committed husbands and wives and Dutiful loving Children
Elders knew to wield their wisdom
Not manipulate it to satisfy their whim.
When Reputation, Honour and Integrity meant the world
And Righteousness didn’t involve killing or exiling
When compassion wrapped every thought, word and deed
Life was about living in Harmony
Surely the wheel of time hasn’t turned so far
Has it?

Wow! I would like to think not.
Well written Rashmi and deeply thought through. I am afraid to say I am with you. Where did the good life go?
you know I don't know how you read my mind, but I was thinking some of these thoughts just yesterday!
this piece is just brilliant!
hmmm, I too think of things that used to be better, at least in my mind. Sometimes I wonder if I was just lucky to have been "reised right" cuz many of those behaving the most poorly (in my opinoin at least) are MY age.

The whole poem is effective and these words seem both apropos to this time in history yet timeless.
Was it ever like this anywhere, really?

I really love this... Unfortunately, the wheel of time seems now standing still.

It seems the wheel of time changes directions over the years, eh? Yet I still believe people are inherently good, that honesty will always be the right thing, and that the goodness in this world shines, even on those days when the cloudy actions of others seem to block time's light. Beautiful words and great wisdom, Rashmi.
amazing when I compare my youth (very similar to your expression) to that of today - it is like a different planet :)
