Over the past few days I have seen/read a lot of blogs on Freeing Tibet. Maybe because China is Hosting the Olympics. I think that's bad taste. We have been invited as guests at the Olympics not as delegates for the Tibetan Cause. I feel that is going against the etiquette of a Guest.
I have Conflicting views regarding the issue. It is not black and white as the media makes it to be. There are lots of factors to be considered involving the History, culture, religious, setting a precedent and political ramifications. If we look at any continent in our world, we will find places in them where there is an ongoing fight for a Separate Nation based on religious, cultural, clannish or political views. The Pro- call the fighters - Freedom Fighters and the Anti call them - Terrorists or Separatists. I refuse to call them by either names cause what I see is a fight for POWER on both sides and other nations of our world, supporting them depending on what is Economically or Strategically lucrative for their own nations.
Here is my Friend Samnang's blog asking some of the Questions that have been going on in my mind.
I have also Links for the Historic Version from both sides.
This is the Chinese Version
This is the Tibetan Version
There are also numerous blogs written by the Pro-Chinese and the Pro-Tibetan on the web, if you look for it. Each with their own versions of what happened and whats happening. Each having their own agendas according to their perception of Reality.
Of course, I am no better, I have an agenda too - Presenting as many views as possible so there is an understanding of the situation before we take sides.

I don't see ANY debate at all in this regard. China is an evil government that imprisons its own citizens and forces mothers to murder their own children by the millions. Their policies towards Tibet are barbaric and evil... Bush probably felt right at home there...
In my opinion there is no moral justification for ANY athlete going to that despicable country and it is a disgrace that the United States and other alleged democracies did not boycott the games. China should be shut off from the world community. Instead we are enriching them to our own destruction through outsourcing our jobs and allowing them to buy our nations and national resources.
Just my thoughts...

I agree no democracy is as squeaky clean as it likes to paint itself to be when it suits it. In the end though the change needs to come from within and not by imposition by the outside world. We've seen what's happened in Iraq, and how the so-called democracies are in their meddling in every aspect of the political process, with no sign of real freedom for the Iraqi people. As to the Olympic Games, they are just the same old money-spinners and for people to believe the propaganda about how they bring peace and harmony to the world is naive.
@ John : I Respect your thoughts. I refrain from calling any government evil because I want to keep the most evident difference between me and the president of US(he uses the word EVIL for most any nation he wants to go to war with). I havent found a Government that is absolutely perfect for its people. Democracy's are even more messy from what I see. I dont want to impose my morals on others so I would leave the choice of going to the olympics or not, to the athletes and their nations.
@ Giles : I think the Olympics is like those Inter-office get-togethers where they think it fosters a better understanding between deparments and their people while the truth is far from what is believed. To a degree you get a snap-shot of how people are when we are amidst them but never the whole picture.
With all respect, I think the leadership of several nations are evil. I'm not talking about the people of the countries but the government. there are many good and moral Chinese, Americans, Russians, etc. The US and China are probably the most evil governments on earth today. It is the responsibility of governments to determine foreign policy. By supporting these games the US and other supposedly civilized governments have sanctioned the countless evils done by the Chinese government to their people, to the Tibetans, etc.
In the case of China, read about the government inflicted horrors imposed on the athletes! Many of the Chinese athletes were not competing because they wanted to. They were slaves performing for their masters.
That's just the marketing to get people to spend money.
