There are at least two sides to an event. But when it comes to Nations and nationhood there are many sides. The factors include- Historical Memory, the changes over time, the Present Will of the population and Human Beings Greed for Power and Need to Be Special. The above link is the Chinese view to why Tibet is Theirs.
This URL provides the Tibetian View of why They cant be part of China -

Please keep in Mind that each side have their Agenda and mostly has nothing to do with the will of the people living in those areas. I think its very easy to get people to side one way or another if you find what makes them tick and give them a reason within their paradigm of thinking.

Too true, and to want Western democracy is all too easy for people who live in countries which practice it. People forget that the Dalai Lama actually originates from a theocracy although he's now jumped on the democracy bandwagon.
I dont mind him changing his mind or wanting a Democracy. It works for His Holiness to want it cause under the present NON-democratic government in China, there is little chance that Tibet will be Independent. What makes me skeptical is that Religious/Spiritual Heads do not make good Political Heads, they only make good Lobbyists for their own Religion.
I doubt he wants a democracy. He expects to be the head of state upon his return.
