Festival of Food

This is my entry for Sabiha's food festival. This snack used to be something my mother used to prepare for us. I usually eyeball every ingredient for the quantity so the quantities I have given here is an approximation. I havent prepared this in a long while. Hope you all enjoy it.

Yummy fried bread (snack or desert)

Ingredients :

  1. A small loaf of whole wheat bread, crust removed and slices cut into quarters.
  2. Enough ghee or you can substitute vege oil for deep fry
  3. Sugar syrup (sugar : water :: 1½ : 2)
  4. Grated fresh(or dry) coconut (tastes better with fresh one) -1 cup
  5. White sesame seeds roasted - 1/4 cup
  6. Poppy seeds roasted - 1 tsp
  7. Cashewnuts and almonds crushed (optional)
  8. Crushed cardamom- 3 tsp

Method:

1. Prepare the sugar syrup by bringing to boil the sugar and water and keep aside to cool.

2. Fry the bread quarters in the ghee/oil till they get a brown shade; remove and put them on a paper towel to drain of the oil.

3. Mix the grated coconut, the sesame seeds, poppy seeds, crushed almonds and cashew and crushed cardamom in a bowl. (I usually put the nuts into a chopper for a few pulses)

4. Spread the mixture on to a plate.

5. After the quarters cool, dip them into the sugar syrup for a count of 30 or till they are soaked but not soggy ; remove and coat them with the mixture in the plate.

This cant be stored for long, so eat it on the same day that it was prepared. Enjoy.
